No matter how you look at them, cakes have been a staple when it comes to important occasions and gatherings. Composed of layers upon layers of soft sponge with a sweet filling in between and beautifully enclosed in either fondant or frosting or even left naked or bare, there’s just something about a slice of cake that can put you in a festive mood.

Maybe this is because cakes themselves symbolize celebration. Whether it’s a wedding, a birthday, or even a work promotion, having cake just makes the special day a bit more memorable. But sadly, something so good can still be very bad for your health. Having too much cake and desserts in general can cause tooth decay as well as an increase in the body’s sugar levels.

Not all is doomed, however, as the metro does offer guilt-free cake options you can splurge on without feeling the regret afterwards. The following options aren’t only healthy; they also bring new twists to well-loved classics. Read on to find out where you can find guilt-free healthy cakes in Metro Manila to indulge in on your cheat days!

2. Corner Tree Café’s Carrot Cake

Corner Tree Café is a homey, rustic vegetarian restaurant that offers not only vegan food but also gluten-free dishes. Opened in 2009, the restaurant also serves house cocktails, local beers, and wine.

One of the café’s healthy dessert options is its carrot cake. Not only is it vegan—meaning, it was made with no dairy and eggs—the cake is also sugar-free, making it a top choice if you’re watching your sweets intake but at the same time wanting a good finale for your meal.

July 2020 Update: Corner Tree Cafe is open for dine-in transactions with safety protocols in place.

3. Gourmet Gypsy Art Café

Location: 25 Don A. Roces Avenue, Brgy. Paligsahan, Diliman, Quezon City

Another keto-friendly restaurant that’s sure to satisfy your appetite is Gourmet Gypsy Art Café. The restaurant originated from the school Open Hand which helps young adults with special needs to be ready for employment. Gourmet Gypsy serves as a sort of transition phase for the students, which is why more than 30 percent of the staff is composed of individuals with special needs.

Most of Gourmet Gypsy’s dessert menu are decadent, but one proves to be far healthier than the rest: the Quezo de Bola cheesecake. Sugar-free and low in carbohydrates, the cheesecake is a fun twist to the Christmas favorite, Quezo de Bola.

4. Pipino Vegetarian Food by Pino

Location: 39 Malingap Street, Teachers Village, Quezon City
Prices: PhP125/slice, PhP1,250/whole

Pipino’s other guiltless desserts include ice cream, cookies, and cupcakes.

Pipino Vegetarian Food by Pino runs with the idea that vegetarian food can be delicious and nutritious without being boring and bland. Serving only meals that are 100% plant-based, the restaurant has successfully found ways to make decadent Filipino dishes, such as kare-kare and sinigang, healthier and a lot more artery-friendly.

Just one in its long list of guilt-free desserts is the vegan chocolate cake. Rich and moist, it’s almost unbelievable that the cake was made with zero eggs and zero dairy.

5. Classic Confections

Locations:
Level 1, Phase 1B, U.P. Town Center, Katipunan Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City
Second Level, The Podium, 12 ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City
G/F, Three Central, Valero Street, Salcedo Village, Makati City
Ground Floor, Solenad 3, Building E., Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna
Price: PhP1,195/whole

Classic Confections also has a special menu that is only offered during the holidays.

Classic Confections is one of the more established restaurants in this list with branches in some of the metro’s largest malls. Aside from cakes and cookies, sweet and savory pastries and artisanal breads can also be bought from the bakery.

But while Classic Confections is known for packing the sweet in its desserts, its Lemon Torte is different from the rest. Sweet and tangy with a generous serving of cashews and meringue, it’s hard to believe that the cake is completely sugar-free.

There are already enough things in the world to be cautious about, and dessert shouldn’t have to be one of them. These restaurants and bakeries are just some of the proof that something delicious doesn’t have to be necessarily bad for you.
